Some Fallen Romas

  1. Here's a gardening question for you: My lettuce has been thriving over the last couple months and I have been picking off the bottom leaves and allowing the smaller top leaves to continue growing, which is what I read I was supposed to do for continual re-growth. In the last couple weeks, the plant has developed a long, thick, and very tall stalk (over 2 feet?) and the leaves taste more bitter (this is red leaf lettuce, somewhat bitter to begin with). Have my plants outlived their purpose? I cut off a couple of them about 2 inches from the ground to see if they would regrow, but no luck yet. It's been much hotter (high 80s) than normal for us, maybe that has something to do with it?

I miss you. I really am sorry I missed Del Mar.
